There is no doubt that the issue of Human Trafficking is modern day slavery. It is a part of the fabric and DNA of humanity in every culture throughout history. The use of force, manipulation, and coercion of others to obtain some type of labor or sex act is epidemic everywhere, especially in the domestic landscape of United States. It has only been within a few recent years that the depth, size and shape of the issue has even been acknowledged collectively by American culture. As a result, great momentum has been generated for funding research, education, programs, and even legislation to address the crime. However, all of this has been done through a law enforcement narrative that is both limited and exclusively punitive. This approach has only temporarily medicated surface level symptoms and unfortunately has created a greater distance in the pursuit of obtaining a tangible cure.

Professor Howard Zehr’s book “Changing Lens” creates a pioneering and alternative approach to crime & justice in America. As opposed to the existing framework of “retributive justice”, where crime is viewed as an offense against the state, Zehr introduces an understanding called “restorative justice” where crime is viewed as a violation of people and relationships.

The expression “restorative justice” has become popular and has evolved into a movement that has attracted many segments of society including Police Officers, Judges, Academics, Teachers, Politicians, Juvenile Justice Agencies, Victim Support Groups, Non-Profits, Artists, and even Churches. The Unlikely Mission is a non-profit 501 C-3 organization that is committed to igniting a cultural shift that permanently alters the way humanity sees and responds to those who participate in and are impacted by human trafficking in America. It is our mission to inspire, train, and equip educators, community influencers, and ministry leaders to reshape the size and scope of human trafficking in their communities through integral leadership, limitless compassion and restorative justice.
